NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS IN LITMUS TEST

I have been following the trending events in and around the delegates’ conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress these past three weeks with deep-rooted concerns. Concerns for mistakes that are possible. Concerns for possible trivialization of hidden dangers. Concerns for the unknown. Concerns for what seems to be well known and yet appears to be deceitful. I was turning over all these concerns in my mind while at the same time praying that the Almighty God may not lead to temptation men and women of the Nigeria Labour Congress gathered at Abuja, so that they will accentuate only the positive factors that would help them build consensus during deliberations and discussions. It was our plea that people should remember that after all said and done that we as Brothers or Comrades, as the case may be, that we are one and should always act as our brother’s keeper; and that the elective positions that are vied for are merely for our common good. A LAMENTATION ON NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS

Most recent developments in the Nigerian Labour Movement has suddenly sparked off a renewed attention on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the premier labour centre in the country, demanding of a critical assessment of the status of the organization in the country after 37 years of its existence, which we will proceed herein to execute most dispassionately. And in this connection it is never to be forgotten that the central labour organization is the creation by its affiliated trade unions for purposes of helping to actualize their collective objectives. LET'S TALK ABOUT CORRUPTION



The semantics war currently raging over the word "CORRUPTION" can only be resolved when there exists a consensus as to what exactly we are talking about, possible only through a dispassionate feedback. Dictionary.com defines "corruption" as a "dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving "bribery" and goes on to add "unscrupulousness, deceit, deception, duplicity, double-dealing, fraud, fraudulence, misconduct, law-breaking, crime, criminality, delinquency, wrongdoing, and villainy". Quite a mouthful already, and it goes on to add that it is "the process by which a word or expression is changed from its original state to one regarded as erroneous or debased" and "the process by which a computer database or program becomes debased by alteration or the introduction of errors". To this list we must add the contribution by Transparency International that defines corruption as simply "the abuse of entrusted power for private gain, it hurts everyone who depends on the integrity of people in position of authority".[read more]
